GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE
(Gainsbourg: Vie heroique)
This film recounts the colourful life story of French singer and provocateur Serge Gainsbourg, known as much for his hugely outrageous antics in public as he was for his taboo-busting song lyrics and orchestrations. We follow Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino) from his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, to his beginnings as small time musician and finally pop superstar, with a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack that includes many of the musician’s greatest hits.
What the Critics say…
In conjoining Jewish heritage and classic French chanson, Gainsbourg celebrates the hybridity of contemporary French culture, while its combination of realist narrative and poetic animation make it both a touching biopic and an inspired musical.
Sight and Sound
Why was Gainsbourg a hero? The film leaves the question hanging. I am afraid it was only because, like Sinatra, he did it his way. Which no one can deny.
The film has a ripe, grown-up eroticism as rich as the sumptuous costumes and sets.
